5/3: Today, we will be looking at the very end of the war and the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. This is the surrender of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant's Army of the Potomac. While this is usually considered the end of the war, it is not the official end. The largest southern army still has to surrender. At the time of Appomattox, Joseph Johnston, Confederate General, is sitting with 60-70,000 Confederate soldiers in Greensboro. A couple weeks after Lee surrenders at Appomattox, Joseph Johnston will surrender to William T. Sherman at Bennett Place, North Carolina (Just outside of Durham). That will be the largest surrender of Confederate forces during the war, and it will largely end the war. Nevertheless, you students will be looking at the terms of the surrender at Appomattox. After you complete the handout, we will discuss and watch the crash course. FINALLY, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOU WILL HAVE A TEST ON MONDAY. THAT TEST WILL BE OPEN NOTES. Below is a list of the documents you are allowed to use on your test. However, ALL OF THESE DOCUMENTS HAVE TO BE TURNED IN TO MR. MITCHELL TOMORROW, 5/4, IN ORDER TO BE USED ON YOUR TEST. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO BRING ANYTHING IN ON MONDAY. WHEN YOU TURN IN YOUR NOTES, YOU ALSO NEED TO TURN IN YOUR NOTES FOR TEST HANDOUT WITH YOUR NAME AND A CHECK OR A MARK BY EVERY DOCUMENT YOU ARE TURNING IN FOR NOTES.
5/2: Today, we will be looking at two overall topics, Prisoners of War (POW's) during the Civil War and Andersonville POW camp, as well as Clara Barton and the Red Cross. You will be looking at several primary and secondary sources to assist you with this. You should discuss these primary and secondary sources in groups of 2 or 3, responding to the guiding questions. The ultimate goal of today is to answer the essential question below:
Essential Question: Is there truly any such thing as a “civilized war?” What does a civilized war look like? Would you say that the Civil War could be called “civilized?”
